The year in which the case is submitted: Year I
The semester in which the case is submitted: Semester II
Subject objective:

To understand the possibilities of exploring the effects of inhaled anesthetics and to learn ways of applying inhaled anesthetics for anesthesia in experimental animals, as well as ways to measure concentration and evaluate the anesthesia effect.

Case contents:

Division of inhaled anesthetics. Systems for dosing inhaled anesthetics in vitro. Systems for the use of inhaled anesthetics in vivo and in medicine. Performing inhaled anesthesia in an experimental animal. Assessment of the depth of anesthesia based on the assessment of the change in behavior of an experimental animal; minimum alveolar concentration (MAK). Side effects of inhaled anesthetics. Evaluation of cytotoxic effect of in vitro and in vivo applied inhaled inhalation anesthetic. The effect of inhaled anesthetics on cellular growth. Preparation and coloring of cells for flow cytometry after exposure to inhaled anesthetics. Interpretation of the results of the effect of inhaled anesthetic, preparation of data for statistical analysis. Use of inhaled anesthetics in studies of the non-anesthesia effects of other drugs and methods. Presentation of the results.
Published studies on the effects of inhaled anesthetics. Seminar paper: critical analysis of the publication in the field of application of inhaled anesthetics.

Learning outcomes: competences, knowledge, skills that the subject develops:

1. Identify methods of application and assessment of the effect of inhaled anaesthetics in vivo and in vitro
2. Train for independent inhalation anesthesia in an experimental animal (mouse or rat) and assess the depth and side effects of anesthesia.
3. Critically evaluate a publication describing the effect of inhaled anesthetic.
4. Interpret scientific data in the field of experimental anesthesia.

ECTS Credits 4
Lectures 15
Seminars (IS) 5
Exercises (E) 0
Altogether 20
The way of teaching and acquiring knowledge:

Students are obliged to attend lectures or consultations, do exercises and independently perform one anesthesia and analysis of one publication in the field of the use of inhaled anesthetics.

Ways of teaching and acquiring knowledge: (notes)

The 5-hour exercises will be held in the laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek and the Clinical Hospital Center in Osijek.

How to monitor the quality and performance performance (evaluation):

The success of the course will be evaluated annually by the joint expert committee of the Rudjer Boskovic Institute, the University of Dubrovnik and the University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek on the basis of exam success and surveys of participants.
